Welcome to Common Ground!
Hi! I’m a high school student from New York who’s interested in diversity, equity, and inclusion work and social justice initiatives. Growing up, I often overheard conversations between the adults in my life about topics spanning from the legalization of same-sex marriage to the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. I always thought that the belief system that ran through my veins ever since I learned how to talk was as clear to the world as it was to me: everyone deserves to be treated with respect and given equitable opportunities.
As I got older, I realized that the happenings around the globe and the debates around them were just a tad bit more nuanced than that. My goal with this blog is to break down current events related to diversity and equity for young people like myself so that everyone is able to participate in these discussions and gain a full understanding of the work that needs to be done in order to move towards a more just society. This kind of work is always ongoing and it can sometimes become frustrating to stay committed to what seems like such a faraway objective, but I’ve learned that there’s strength in numbers and finding other people who share your ambition is key. On my blog, you’ll find accounts of DEI efforts, articles breaking down key terms and relevant language, book and movie recommendation lists, and so much more. I hope you’ll read along - let's find common ground!
